BETULINIC ACID DERIVATIVES AS POTENTIAL HIV-I  REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE INHIBITORS.

Betulinic acid  isolated, from several plants, is found to be inhibitor  of HIV- replication in H 9 lymphocyte cells.  Eight derivatives of betulinic acid were evaluated as inhibitor of HIV-1 replication, [T. Fujioka et al, Journal of Natural products, 37 (2), 243 (1994)].  C 17  Carboxyl group, C 3 – hydroxyl and  double bond between C20 and C 29  seems to have a crucial role in regulating the activity.
Several esters of betulinic acid, involving 3- Beta-hydroxyl were also prepared to test their insect-antifeedant activity (S.G. Jagdesh, G.L. David krupadanam, G. Srimannarayana, S.S. Murthy, A. Kaur and S.S. Raja, J. Agric. Food Chem., 46, 2797 (1998).  Among them three compounds showed high insect-antifeedant activity.
THUS SYNTHESIS ofSEVERAL ALIPHATIC-OR AROMATIC-ACID ESTERS OR HEMIESTERS INVOLVING 3-BETA-HYDROXYL OF BETULINIC ACID OR DIHYDRO BETULNIC ACID  WILL BE REWARDING  TO DISCOVER NEW HIV-1 REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE INHIBITORS.
